Microsoft access

Access is a database program. You may not have realized you were using a database, but when you go to FYE or a telephone book, you are using a database. It is a lot of data organized so that you can perform a search to find information quickly. As you go to FYE, you might look up a specific artist (Rascal Flatts) and all that information comes quickly to the screen. All the data had to be first entered into the program before you could do this search. This is a database.

First of all you need to understand how Microsoft Access breaks down a database. Some keywords involved in this process are: Database File, Table, Record, Field, Data-type. Here is the Hierarchy that Microsoft Access uses in breaking down a database.

class notes:

  • Basic Notes - database defined, access screen, database elements
  • Access Defined - field vs. record, design view vs. datasheet view, editing, sorting, primary key
  • Design View Elements - explanation of the elements, a breakdown of data types & field properties defined
  • Advanced Notes - reports, queries, dynasets & criteria, sorting and grouping defined

demonstration File:

  • Hotel - learn how to design and set up a database table
